About Late Career Operator

The weekly playbook for executives in the second half of their career.

Most career advice assumes you're climbing. This one doesn't.

Late Career Operator is a weekly brief for executives, founders, directors and senior operators who have already built something, and are now thinking carefully about what to build next. Board seats. Advisory roles. Fractional leadership. Angel checks. Founding chapters. Second acts that draw on three decades of pattern recognition instead of pretending the last thirty years didn't happen.

What you'll get

Every week, one focused brief covering one of the following:

  • The moves: How experienced operators are structuring board roles, advisory engagements, fractional gigs, and founder bets. Real deal structures, real comp, real tradeoffs.
  • The market: What's actually happening in the late career economy. Who's hiring fractional CXOs. Which boards are recruiting. Where the capital is flowing for second time founders.
  • The mindset: Frameworks for navigating the identity shift that happens when you stop being the person with the title and start being the person with the judgment.
  • The people: Conversations with operators who have done it, what worked, what didn't, and what they wish they had known earlier.

Who it's for

If you're 45 to 65, have run something meaningful, and you're asking some version of these questions, you're the audience:

  • What's my next chapter actually worth, financially and otherwise?
  • How do I build a portfolio of roles instead of one job?
  • Is now the time to start something, or to compound what I've built?
  • How do I stay relevant without becoming the oldest person in the room trying too hard?
  • What do I want the next ten years of work to feel like?

Who I am

I'm Marc-Eric LaRocque. I've spent my career at the intersection of technical leadership and business development, which means I've seen enough of both sides to know that the second half of a career is where most operators either compound their value or quietly fade. This brief exists because I want to be in the first group, and I figure I'm not the only one.

What this isn't

It isn't motivational content. It isn't retirement planning. It isn't a LinkedIn influencer feed dressed up as a newsletter. It isn't going to tell you to find your passion or build your personal brand.

It's a strategic brief for people who already know how to operate, and who want to operate well for the next twenty years.

Who is the author?

Marc-Eric LaRocque spent four decades inside the data and AI industry before most organizations knew they needed either. In 2010, he founded a data management and analytics firm, built it into something worth acquiring, and sold it to a PE-backed software company. He is now VP at KData, a Databricks consulting firm, where he helps clients get more out of their data.

The Late Career Operator is his weekly newsletter for senior executives navigating the second half of a serious career. Not retirement planning. Not LinkedIn inspiration. The actual playbook, from someone still inside the arena.
